Anubians are a human-canine genetic chimera. One could call them part man, part dog and would not be rude because it is simply a scientific fact. Just like the Gallians, the Anubians are not just very popular choices for Assignment. Despite this, their genome has withstood the test of time and is considered to be one of the most successful lineages in the Incarnate movement.
Like most Adepts, Anubians can shift into a full canine form – this can be a dog, wolf or even a fox, depending on the exact bloodline and/or donor of the lineage genes. When they shift into their 'alt' or alternate form, the process is very painful, takes hours, and they become a human-sized version of their canine heritage; this means an Anubian shifting into a dog retains the same mass, same weight, and same brain size. Unlike many outdated fictions concerning werewolves, Anubians don't lose their memory or are overcome by a homicidal urge (though monthly testosterone or estrogen surges are an issue, see 'In Heat'). They are not vulnerable to silver, and they most certainly do not howl at the moon, except when completely drunk and trying to drown out some idiot playing Justin Bieber. They do, however, gain their full array of genetic advantages in their alternate form.
Even though a dog's brain can be one-tenth the size of a human’s brain, the part that controls smell is 40 times larger than in humans. A human has about 5 million scent glands whereas dogs have 125 million to 300 million. In Anubians, both the smell glands and corresponding brain matter have been optimized while retaining full human brain functionality regardless of anatomical change.
While puppies are born deaf, by the time their sense of hearing has developed in 21 days, they can already hear 4 times the distance of a human. Dogs can hear higher pitched sounds and can detect a frequency range of 67-45,000 Hz, compared to a human range of 64-23,000 Hz.
Because canine and human anatomy is so similar, historically much human medicine was developed through laboratory testing on dogs. Conversely, veterinarians routinely use human medications - labeled and dosed for animals or off-label on dogs. This is part of the reason why the Anubian genetic matrix is so stable and like the mainstream Adept lineages have incredibly few defective genes or risk of mutation. It is one of the 'safe' choices and many new Incarnates who were not prior carriers choose Anubians (or Gallians) as their top-of-the-mind default option.
